Istrian sheep is an autochthonous breed
In cooperation with the Burza hrane Istria indigenous breeds, the Istrian sheep is an autochthonous breed of sheep, in the past spread over the entire territory of the Istrian peninsula. It belongs to the group of sheep with combined production properties of meat-milk, with high quality meat and for our conditions high production of high quality milk. In the 1980s, abandoned Istrian pastures were inhabited by sheep originating from the central part of the Balkan Peninsula (Kosovo, Macedonia) with equal resistance to climatic conditions in Istria, but poorer meat and milk productivity. Such cattle breeders are left to independent selection work, with extremely heterogeneous sheep populations resulting from incompetence.
